The Secret Kept for Decades after World War 2 Image

The birth of modern computer science really dates back to World War II and the breaking of the German codes. By allowing the Allies to read the Germans messages, it shortened the war by an estimated two years. Some of the messages were way more encrypted than others. The messages that came directly from Hitler himself was way more encrypted then any other sent. In order to break those codes, it took the Allies months to break those codes. But that was way too long for the war effort. And so in order to break those codes faster, they built the first computer. It was called Colossus and it took breaking Hitler’s messages from months down to hours greatly helping the war effort. The fact that the codes were broken was kept a secret by the Allies for decades after the war over.
